Amongst the passengers, by the John Penn, is the ex-Mayor of Hokitika, Mr Wm. Shaw, who is proceeding to Shortland, for the purpose of starting a paper, to be termed the “ Shortland Times.” Mr Shaw has with him some ninety packages of printing material, jjpd a full staff. Late Auckland papers state that a number of miners have proceeded to Ohinemuri from Shortland, as a deputtaiontowaitupon Te Hira with the view of inducing the native chief, to open up the district of the Upper Thames. It appears to be very doubtful, however, whether the mission will be attended with success, as Te Hira’s party are said to be altogether opposed to the presence of ,the pakeha in their country,
