THE ABORIGINES’ PROTECTION SOCIETY AGAIN.
y/e are credibly informed that, an agent of the Aborigines’ Protection Society, -dressed as a clergyman, is now in this city having returned from a visit to William Thompson and other chiefs in tlie interior. It is said that this person landed in Christchurch, and having obtained letters from Mr. Fitzgerald to William Thompson, came northwards. He is described as a j.oung man of about 23 years of age, 5 ft. 10 in. in height, and dressed as a clergyman, and when amongst the natives was known by the name of “ Edward.” For what purpose has our old enemy, that meddlesome iniscinevioua Aborigines Protection Society, sent us an. agent amongst the lately disaffected natives m Waikato 1 These unfortunate natives were beginning to see tlie error of their past action, and to accept their present, position w'itli resignation, and were returning to the cultivation of the soil and other peaceful occupations. To say the least of it, the Society has acted a foolish part. Should any aggression take place upon the European territory it will very likely be laid to the charge of the society that its meddlesome interference has brought about a renewal of such a state of tilings. Had the Aborigines’ Protection Society any object in view, of which they were not really ashamed, such for instance as the elucidation of the real merits of Maori grievances, and the cause of Maori insurrection, they would have deputed some gentleman of standing and position, who wouid arrived here in an open and manly manner. He would, in such case, have received every facility and assistance towards the accomplishment of his object from the people of this Province. —‘ Auckland Herald.’
