The Gold Adventurers.—-Tlie setters here who have gone to the Otago ElDo/ado "have all done pretty well up to this time, so far as we have learned. One young, man,, who has . been absent three month*.' has sent home about ,£135. Of course each' r of bis party, wh6 were all from this neighbourhood, has done equally well. One of our late neighbours 1 has taken to making cradles, which he finds to pay as well as digging. These are not the pieces of furniture which our female readers may suppose them to he, a “ blessed baby"’ being quite an unknown creature at Gabriel’sgully, but they are instruments for washing gold, a far less humanising process than, putting the baby to sleep.
‘ Mutual Improvement Society.—-The usual monthly lecture was delivered hepe on Tuesday evening last by Mir. JTillcoX of z/shtead, the subject being “ the British Poets,” which he.treated in such a mariner as both to delight and instruct his audience. 7’he readings which were giyen of the most brilliant of the' British .poets,, beautifully illustrated the characteristics of their genius and style as described by the lecturer, and will no doubt induce many of the audience to cultivate a taste for these fine creations of the imagination and genius of our fatherland.
The lecture delivered last month was on “ the Sun ;”.and thus as yet there has been np want either of variety or interest in the subjects that have occupied the attention of the society at its monthly reunions.
