LETTERS TO THE EDITOR.
Sir, —As you have allowed a statement to appear in your paper of the 27th ult., concerning myself, for which there is no foundation in fact, I must request you to contradict it, by stating that as I am.ntoin the receipt of any Militia pay, it is therefore evident, that the cause why I have not hitherto proceeded to attend to my duty in Auckland, is not thereby indicated . I am, &e., J. C; C/2A7FFORD, - Wellington, July 4, 1861. ~ -? , .Wanganui; June. 19, 183,1. Sir, — T have been informed/ that during the Rifle■ /Shooting-for the .Government Prizes a candidate c|thie; to the ...stjiml . ami, f»;ed c lying with the rifle tightly strapped to his leg ; this may be no infringement of the ’ government regulations made for-tlie'decision, but I much doubt its utility; imagine, Sir, a man with rifle firmly bound to his leg being ordered to charge, or make an immediate indispensable advance, or (alas, that such occurrences have taken place) to retire stilting it off with his gun bandaged up to one of his lower extremi ties as if. by way of precaution against the. consequences of possible breakage of the limb.' Sir, Rifle is a puff and a screw, still as her mother, / cannot permit her to be tried by a test that might throw doubt on her quietness. Fair play is a jewel. • I am, &c., - ■: Brown Bess. July 10th, 1861. , Sir, —May I be permitted, through the medium of your paper; to call" the attention-of land owners and land occupiers in the district situate on the ; sea side of the Waitotara.liiie, to the following, facts. ■ At present I am not aware .that there is one single line of road in the district that can be considered bona fide. I believe that every occupier is in one way or other.travelling on the sufferance of bis neighbour. T’iiis district has an area of some 15,000 or 20,000 acres (more or'less), with from 60 to 100 (more or less) resident settlers. -May I ask, why has not this district been proclaimed, as other districts have? Is it, that the settlers are afraid of taxing their lands for so. desirable an object as the m iking of roads, or is it to be imputed to total -indifference 'to so important a suhjejt ? ; , I trust the subject will impress itself on the attention of every resident settler’ in the district, and that some of the m ;st : influential will lose no time in getting it proclaimed a district, for.,the., purpose l -of electing wardens, #c. It is generally believed that flanganui is the finest district in the province of Wellington ; yet st:ll, here is a .district of laud adjoining the township, which; has never been proclaimed, and consequently does not possess a Board of Wardens Hoping -the 'subject will receive the attention it demands, I am, #c. John Morgan.
