LOCAL INTELLIGENCE.
JPanganui Races. —A numerously attended public meeting took place on Thursday evening last, at Dunleavy’s, JFanganui Hotel. Capt. Blewett was unanimously elected Chairman. Jfhe accounts for the past year having been passed, it was carried that the next Races should take place on the 13th arid ,14th December next. The meeting then resolved itself into f a. Committee,? an(ba ; pWgralnme of the 'Races’was'drawn out, ‘the particulars of which will be found in our advertising columns. Major Trafford, Major Cooper, Dr. Tuke, Messrs. Nixon, arid WfCB.- J?iissell were elected Stewards., Dr., Gibson was appointed Judge ; Mr.. Deighton, Clerk of ' the Course;' and Mr. H. Stokes, 1 Honorary'Secretary.' A proposition made bv Mr. Gotty was unanimously for the Wangrinui Races' this year, do niake application to the proper authorities ;of this Province, that the piece of land now occupied as the Wanganui Race Course, 1 he for ever §ecured as such for public benefit.” The thanks of- ; the meeting were then giYeii htp; the Honorary" Secretary for his exertions''on ""behalf of ihe Fund, and to the Chairman .for his courteous, conduct in the Chair.. - ■ r

They, propose holding various meetings!with the river natives, tri give them an accoilnt of the conference, and also to obtain; tbenr concurrence in a; request to the Governor; that the meeting of 1861 may. be held here', in which case they; propose to ' provide' jia.rt bf ; the provisions necessary for it. Reliable, intelligence has been'received of
the arrival at their respective localities of the unniti and natives—laden with plunder froiii Tarimaki—as well’ as" tenof the Waitotara tribe. It is pot known if they intend returning, but they are much elated .with, their success. We beg attention to a : tetter from Mr. .Outfield, Superintendent of Taranaki and a member 'of s theLegislative -Gouncil, which will be found iii another column.
A Military Ball took place at Mr. Gerse’s Cknhmercial Hotel, on the sth instant. -After, having partaken of at which the good'things of this life wfeife supplied in prolusion, the company numbering nearly 60, retired' to the Ball Room, which was tastefully decorated with flags and evergreens. The Band of the 65tlr in attendance, and played with its usual spirit.; Colonel Wyatt honored the ball room with his presence, and was received with three hearty cheers. The conduct of the military, was, in every: respect throughout the evening most exemplary. Ranging until 6 .next .morning., when all separated, highly pleased with the liberal and creditable manner in wliicli the host of >tli6 - Commercial had conducted his arrangements; for their comfort and amuse-, ment. It is to be hoped that tins may be the precursor pf many more festive scenes of the kind in Wanganui. V i T V- . The Wonga Wonga has been engaged by the General Government; and the Directors have given - permission to send her to Wai-; tara and to’’ Wanganui as occasion requires.
