There is news from Hong Kong to the 23rd > May. ' The British troops had nearly i all arrived, and were going on to the north with all expedition. Half of the French force had not arrived,, and it was said that it would not be-all-ready for two months. The plan of operations is, not known, but it is supposed that the capture of the Takui forts-will; be left to Admiral Hope. They are said to be greatly, strengthened, and the Chinese by incessant, practice have become good artillerymen. The rendezvous for*the.'British force is in Talienwhan bay, and fon the French at Che-foo, in. the' immediate neighbourhood. These places • are within 200 miles-of tlie Beiho.-. The continued delay of Zbid. Jftgin causesdisappointment, and it is doubtful if any-mili-tary operations can be undertaken this year; the summer season- is much too unhealthy, for*field movements.

The rebels are said to have met with re*veises about the Yang-tze; but in the neighbourhood of Canton the imperialists have been defeated lately. The imperialists have also been obliged to raise the siege of Nankin. Between tliat city and Hangchow they have also • been worsted; In Cheh-piarig i the- Z’ai-pings - have had great success. Some parts of thecountry are described as having been changed" into a. desert. by these rebels, entire towns having been destroyed.; .
