CANTERBURY.
On the 25th July a meeting was held in Christchurch, at which a resolution was passed, to make a subscription for the relief of the Taranaki settlers. £263 3s. 6d. was collected at the meeting, besides £4O, the proceeds of a ball and concerts at Kaiapoi. There was a heavy fall of snow from the 21st to the 24th ult.; it lay five to six inches deep, and in some casos had drifted to the depth of two to three feet. On the 24th a rapid thaw began. A new building has just been commenced in Lyttelton for the Club ; the contract has been taken at £3600, and the estimated cost when finished may be expected "to reach £SOOO or more.
