OTAGO.

The following is an extract from a letter to the Superintendent from Mr. Stafford, of date 26tli March, which appeared in the Otago Provincial Gazette of 3rd May :—■ “ As regards the supply of rifles, orders have been some time since forwarded to England for a sufficient quantity of the best description of rifle accoutrements, &c., for the militia, and on their being received a supply will be forwarded to Otago.” Immigration. —ln a private letter, of date Feb. 17, addressed to J. M’Glashan, Esq., from one of the British agents, the writer says :—“ We have taken action as to sending -out English immigrants from an English port, and no exertion will be spared by us to carry out the resolutions of the Provincial Council. You said you expected six ships to arrive before September, 1860, and we are glad to think your expectations will be met. You have the ‘ Sevilla,’ ‘ Gala,’ ‘ Stormcloud,’ and the three for which we have entered into a contract with P. Henderson and Co. *. * * We may mention that one first ship is already filled up with a first-class set of emigrants. In the -Tune ship a fine set of men will also leave, shepherds, ploughmen, &c, a number from Berwickshire of the right sort, all A. 1. Mr. John Barr’s effusion ‘ There’s nae place like Otago yet,” has told. It comes home to Scotchmen's -nearis—it-vvao wvupif»i advertisement, and has appeared in several of our papers.” Oatmeal Mill The necessary machinery for the grinding of oats and the production of oatmeal has lately arrived, and been erected at Mr. Runciman’s Mill in the Kaikorai; and a full supply for the wants of the public of Otago can now be obtained. The meal is, from its freshness, very far superior to any which can be imported, and it is sold at a con siderable reduction-upon prices which have hitherto prevailed. This is not only an advantage to the consumer here, but we have little doubt that it will have the effect of increasing the value of Otago oats. — Witness, 19th May.
