LETTERS TO THE EDITOR.
Raugitikei, May 27, 1860. Sir, —Being ignorant of the name or place of abode of the “ Fellow-Settler,” whose letter appeared in your paper of the 24th inst., I beg the insertion, in as early an issue as convenient, of the following address to him. I am, your obdt. servant, Countryman.
My dear Fellow-Settler,; —You have actually perpetrated a controversial letter pf a coluJnn'ahd a half in length—-you have* succeeded ip haying, it inserted, in the Chronicle of the 24th inst.—-you have thereby settled the question at issue between Mr. Fox and his constituents ; which was, whether Mr. Fox was justified in declining to commit himself to the tliat the grounds of the present war were just, and necessitated an immediate appeal to arms. You have 'settled this ques-
turn-by the utterance of the following oracular /> and authoritative; sentence;-^*'The validity ; r> of the title, or the . completeness of the pur* tO chase, has nothing to do with the matter,”—« \: i.e., with the justice or injustice of the grounds of the war. You have therefore decided the -u question at issue in favour of Mr. Fox; for if s ' the validity of the title and completeness of • the purchase have nothing to do with the matter—are not, in fact, the very grounds of vthe war—then Mr. Fox does not apparently know what these grounds consist in, and must • : therefore be justified in declining to commit - himself to a decided opinion as to their justice or injustice, or whether or no they render a ‘; war “ necessary.” You did not intend so to - decide. You have fallen into the error of mis- ? taking one thing for another. Yen have therein followed the example, and met with the fate of many another controversialist! 9 Nevertheless; you have appeared•inf prinfc Y'oaj® are a great. man Ira-you are a lucky mail I^^™ you .are, doubtlessly, satisfied. You are conkrs" gratulated upon naving attained to the sum i of your desires. - Accept of the congratula- 4 tions, in particular, of your humble servant, : i;; Countryman. :
