Local Intelligence.

A claim which a maori brought against a settler at Turakina of £lO for shooting a dog was disposed of in the Magistrate’s Court last Thursday in favor of the settler, on the ground that all dogs which have not been registered may be shot when trespassing on*private ground. The Volunteer Cavalry and Rifle Corps are steadily continuing their drill, and are considered by Major Cooper to be making good progress—so that next Thursday, being her ilfajesty’s birth day, they will no doubt, , make a good figure, everything considered, beside the regular troops. The Tyne brings with her 80 stand of arms, 80 sets of accoutrements, 6000 percussion caps, and 5000 rounds ball ammunition for the use of the rifle corps. We are glad to observe among the passengers by the Wonga Wonga this week, H. H. Turton, Esq., R.M., whose interviews with the nr fives on his former visit were productive of a good understanding. We believe' that he purposes remaining here some time, and have no doubt that bis presence will help to consolidate the good feeling at present existing between the settlers and natives.
