Local Intelligence.

Volunteer Cavalry and Rifle Corps. Answers were received yesterday from the Governor to tiie Memorials sent him in reference to a cavalry and a rifle corps,, authorising- the formation of both at this place. In tlie evening a meeting, was held in the Royal Military Theatre, for the purpose of forming the rifle «orps : . Above ICO names were given in. The chairman, Dr. Tuke, read the government regulations, and arrangements were- made for having the corps formally embodied.

The Ngatiruanui. —A letter was re ceived yesterday by George King, the Putiki chief, from 8 of the Ngatiruanui chiefs, stating that they have 'no- intention of coming south, but that they are going to W&itera, which they say “ is the place for ua for the whole of our wrongs to be settled. Listen ; there will be nothing wrong with us at Rangipo,” (Wanganui). “If you thought there were any wrong intended against Ran gipo we should have been of the same opinion ; but as it is you* have settled it. But this is what it will be with Rangipo- If barracks are erected at Kai-iwl there will be wrong lying by for the future. This is another thing. If a vessel go into the Patea river, that will be wrong; We shall not be respom sible; if a ship go to the Waingongono or Opunake; or any where up to Taranaki, it will be aggression on . the part of the Europeans.

The Vigitjance Committee, it will be seen from another column has not been idle—the meeting with the chiefs was an excellent measure, and the result has been highly satisfactory. Wesleyan Church. —We are requested to draw attention to the advertisement of the opening of this place of worship on Sabbath first. The Rev. James Buller is to occupy the pulpit, and as this gentleman has been appointed to the Canterbury Circuit, probably these will be his last sermons here.. Mr. Buller speaks with ease and fluency, and" has the happy art of keeping up the attention of his hearers with undiminished interest to the close of his discourses. On Monday will be held a Social Tea Meeting, and afterwards a Public Meeting,' which will be addressed by the Rev. il/essrs. Buller, Watkin, Hogg, and Mason.
