OTAGO.
Great sensation,-has been manifested in this district lately in consequence of the monster claim of half a million acres-of land, said to have been bought from the Maories by-Mr: Green. It is to be hoped that this will receive all due weight from the Waste Land Board, which in our opinion ought to be no weight at all. If Mr. Green ever had any claim:it must be now forfeited, with several others equally just, because of their not having been put in- when they were demanded. Land is getting, too valuable, and the people more enlightened, than to be imposed upon by such vague statements as those advanced to substantiate this'claim. — Colonist .
New River.-— On Tuesday, the-23rd ult., we experienced an unusually severe hurricane in the south, the wind blowing from the southwest with such terrific violence that the roofs were in great danger of being blown from the houses. We were for some time very anxious for the safety of a boat full of passengers that was coming down the river. The steamer Geelong was obliged to put into the Bluff harbour, where she was lying for an entire week, waiting an opportunity of crossing the Ne w River bar. This very fact shows the superior advantages: the Bluff possesses, as a safe and practicable harbor over the former port, where, the entrance is so uncertain.— lb.
