THE NORTHWESTER.
Far away on the wide spreading sea I live, Where no taint, in the air is known. And its purest breath I will freely give, Such as only the ocean’s own. Ye have oftentimes thought I was harsh .and hard, As I roll o’er vour lulls and dales. And have frequently said that your joys were marred, When I pass in the angry gales. But ye scarcely have thought of the good I work, When I sweep o’er your wild young land, How I bare in my arms all the ills that lurk Where ye men have ne’er placed your hand. How I search out the swamps where the noisome gas, And malaria always dwell; How I carry them off as I swiftly pass, ■ And their deathly sting dispel. In your cities though young there are holes and haunts, /f here the air is a deadly taint; And I clear out the place for no spectre daunts
The wild winds who have known no restraint. . But they’ll grow, they will grow till the air around - • -
Has a poison in every breath, And ye’ll list to the wail and the scarce known sound Of the tyrant monster Death. Then Til come,—yes I'll come, if ye’ll, leave me room, Where to sweep up your crowded lanes,. [ You will welcome me then, ’mid the stillness ! and gloom, ! When a pcstileacc death-like reigns. ; 1 J. w.
