CORRESPONDENCE.

To the Editor of the Wananga. Friend, salutations. Friend, embark this letter on our swift sailing barque Te Wananga, in order that our Maori friends residing on the Island of Aotearoa, may hear of the death of the aged chief lioani "Waikato. who for four years was stretched upon a bed of sickness. He died on the 13th day of October, 1577. When approaching his end. he l>id farewell to his wife Miriama Hme-i-nukua, and to his children Hohcpa te Ringacohu. Maata Heipora, and Keita Wharemataa, saying these words. •' Wife, I am going hence, And leave you here with our children. I also commit to vour care our sons-in-law and daughter-in-law—Tamati llacre. Wi Patene. and Kataraina Kopu." And again addressing his offspring, he said, " Children, be kind to the widow, which I leave with you."' After saying these words, he chanted the the following laments. (See iiaori letter above.)

When he had finished his laments, he shook hands with, his wife and ohildren . having done this, he closed his eyes in death. After the spirit of this aged man had departed, hi 3 children began to weep, and great was their grief and lamentation fcr the parent they had lost. This chief in his lifetime was a good and benevolent man. kind to children and hospitable to all men.
