PAIHIA.

July 22nd 1874. To Bishop Williams, Friend, Greeting to you and also Mrs. Williams. Friend, here is my letter to you, to tell,to all the Maori tribes of your District when you see them, there is no other person that I can write to, but you. My dear Friends, who are staying at the South end of our Island. Salutation to you, there is perhaps some old people of that end that remembers the great works of our Father the Rev. Williams had done in former days, when he was travelling from ®ae place to another, amongst Armys, (Ope taua) to press down the evils and revealing, also the direot oouxse how to be saved. However, this is a thought r* ol a» hearts and to his great works in controling G-od's rules, and good rules which saved üb, and by which we quietly cast a side our former rules, but it is not only that point we think of, but we look at the 50 years which has passed over. When this Island was covered with great olouds of evils, but he never preserved his body, and worked with the

greatest, effort with the Natives of this Island To my dear friends, It is a right thing for us that we should have some Memorial for him, Paihia is were he resided when he arrived from England, he built the first Churoh there which was a clay building:, and was his stookade (Pa) where he settledafi the difficulties of this world. When the old house fell he hrnlt a new Church which was built of timber,' this was enlarged and repaired last year, and that house was his, and it is erected where the former one was, so we thought of writing a letter to you, perhapß you might be willing to join in with üb, to raise funds towards a Memorial for him, and to erect the same in hiß Churoh, that is all, .Friend the Bishop. If you like, will you forward my letter to Bev. S. Williams and he can read the same to the Maories of his District. If it is agreed to send the names of the person who subscribe the money. from your loving friend, Matthew Taupaki.
