GIRLS’ LIFE BRIGADE

ENROLMENT OF BAPTIST COMPANY. At the Baptist Church, Masterton, yesterday morning, the Second Masterton Company of the Girls’ Life Brigade was enrolled. The service was conducted by the Rev. A. L. Silcock, and a large number of parents and friends were present. Mr Silcock said there were 155 companies of the Girls’ Life Brigade in New Zealand, with about 5000 members. Every company was connected with a church, and all members were pledged to Sunday School, Bible Class and Church attendance. The aim of the Girls’ Life Brigade was to help and encourage girls to become responsible, self-reliant and useful Christian women. The captain’s commission was presented to Mrs Silcock, who has had a great deal of experience of Brigade work. Enrolment cards were presented to Valerie Teeboon, Margaret Madden, Winnie Gronn, Lorraine Baldwin, Delma Hickling, Dawn Allen, Audrey Silcock, Margaret Thorburn, Pat Bilderbeck. Daphne Brown, Dorothy Madden, Betty Thomas. Barbara Gronn, Beryl Mills, Joan Wilson, Margaret Drought, Gwen Groombridge, Margaret Gronn, Valerie Evans and Betty Kjar. During the service four members of the brigade, Margaret and Dorothy Madden, Valerie Teeboon and Audrey Silcock, sang the hymn, “The Old Rugged Cross.” At the close of the service the company paraded on the street in front of the church and was inspected by Miss Mannell. of the Ist Masterton Company, Miss G. Sutherland, and Mr Silcock, who is the company chaplain.
