PERSONAL

Sir Raghunath Pranjpye has been appointed first High Commissioner for India in Australia, states a New Delhi message.

Mr C. M. Bowden, M.P. for Wellington West, and formerly of Masterton, has left Wellington on a short business trip to Australia. Mr C. E. Robertson, manager of the stud stock department of Wright, Stephenson and Co., Ltd., has been appointed a director of the company. The death has occurred of Mrs Algie, wife of Mr R. M. Algie, M.P. for Remuera, after a long illness, says a Press Association telegram from Auckland.

Mr Wt H. Field next month will have completed 41 years’ service on the Wellington Colleges Board of Governors. It was stated at this week’s meeting of the board that Mr Field was appointed Government member of the board on June 16, 1903, and had been reappointed every five years since that time. This period constitutes a record for the board, and is probably a record for any secondary education board in the Dominion.

The death is reported in a Press Association telegram from Dunedin of Dr G. E. Thompson, professor of modern languages, Otago University. Born in Ireland in 1878, Dr Thompson was educated at the Dunedin Boys’ High School and Otago University. He graduated M.A. in 1899. He became a lecturer at the university and the Dunedin Technical School and was appointed to the professorial chair in 1916.

“I regret to have to record the death on active service during the past year of Sapper Pat. Fitzgerald of Carterton, and to express our deepest sympathy with his wife and family,” said Mr A. Campbell Pearce, chairman of the Wairarapa Power Board, at today’s meeting of the board. He was employed by the board for five years, and rendered excellent service. He served in the Middle East for three years before making the supreme sacrifice at Cassino.”
