DECISION TO BREAK AWAY FROM DENMARK INDEPENDENT REPUBLIC TO BE PROCLAIMED GRATITUDE TO UNITED STATES (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) (Received This Day, 11.45 a.m.) WASHINGTON, May 23. As the result of a referendum which had the support of the Government and of all political parties, Iceland has decided to sever its ties with Denmark and will proclaim itself a free and independent republic cn June 17. Iceland celebrated the thousandth anniversary of its Parliament in 1930. It has been a sovereign State since 1918, but united with Denmark through a common King. American soldiers have occupied Iceland since July, 1941. The Icelandic Minister to the United States, Mr Thors, issued a statement that the Americans had power to oppress a small nation, but instead had assisted Iceland in its search for complete freedom. “It is interesting,” he added, “that we have been able to acquire complete independence while enjoying the friendly presence of American soldiers. It could not have happened had the soldiers been German.”
