EIGHTH ARMY PENETRATION IN LIRI VALLEY ENEMY IN PIEDIMONTE ENCIRCLED. GGERMANS FARE BADLY IN COUNTER-ATTACKS. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) (Receiver This Day, 9.30 a.m.) LONDON, May 23. Eighth Army troops, in strong infiltration thrusts, have penetrated a section of the Hitler Line in the Liri [Valley, says Reuter’s correspondent at Advanced Headquarters. Pressure is being maintained in other sectors of the' Liri Valley, but no major attack has developed. The Germans are still clinging to strongpoints in • the Hitler Line fortress of Piedimonte, but are encircled and are being forced out. The enemy yesterday counter-attack-ed, supported by tanks, in a vain effort to dislodge the Allies from heights overlooking the Hitler Line, along the Pontecorvo-Pico Road. German resistance in the central and southern sectors of the Fifth Army area has stiffened considerably, but our infantry, supported by artillery, is continuing to advance across difficult terrain. The enemy yesterday strongly counter-at-tacked against two Allied raiding parties on the east flank of the Anzto bridgehead, but they were repulsed with heavy casualties.
