MAJOR DEFEAT
SUFFERED BY GERMANS FACTS SET AGAINST ENEMY CLAIM. CITY OUTFLANKED & DEFENDERS DRIVEN IN. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) LONDON, April 10. The German radio has stated that the great Black Sea port, Odessa, was evacuated last night after all military installations had been wrecked. It added that all the defenders’ supplies had been moved away in the past few weeks. That is the German version. The Germans’ main hope of evacuation has been the sea exit to Rumania. Their shipping resources are known to have been scanty, and long menaced by the Black Sea Fleet and air forces.
-• Yesterday the Red Army had driven ‘■the German covering forces back to the city and was just outside the northern outskirts. Other Soviet forces had outflanked the city to the southwest and were near the train ferry across the Dniester estuary. The Moscow “Pravda” today stated: “The battle for Odessa is drawing to a close. The enemy has suffered another major defeat.” GOOD RECORD SOVIET AIR ARM IN BALTIC 40 ENEMY SHIPS SUNK LAST MONTH AND 100 FIGHTERS DESTROYED (British Official Wireless.) The Soviet Air Arm in the Baltic Sea sank last month 40 enemy ships and brought down in battle over the sea more than 100 fighters, says a Moscow message.
