LEAVE

SECOND FURLOUGH PARTY MIDDLE EAST FORCE ARRIVAL IN WAIRARAPA TODAY Wairarapa members of the Second Furlough Party from the Second New Zealand Expeditionary Force in the Middle East arrived in the Wairarapa today. They were conveyed by motor transport from Wellington to various centres in the district. The arrival earlier than was expected this afternoon of the Masterton’ draft rather minimised their welcome by the people of the., district. The party arrived at the Army Office, Masterton, at 1 p.m.. instead of 1.10 p.m., as scheduled. The men were met by their relatives and quickly dispersed. As a result of the early arrival, the large crowd which later assembled did not see the men. Included in a representative gathering were local body and R.S.A. representatives. The Town Clerk, Mr G. T. O’Hara Smith, and the deputy-Mayor, Mr W. White, were present, the Mayor, Mr T. Jordan, being out of town. The Masterton Red Cross Transport Section was on parade to convey the men and their relatives to their homes. Each returned man was given a card containing a message of welcome from the Patriotic Committee. There was no formal reception to the men, as this will be held on a later and more appropriate occasion.
