CARTERTON

OBITUARY MR GEORGE RIGGS. (“Times-Age” Special.) The death occurred suddenly at 11.15 o'clock yesterday morning of Mr. George Riggs, of Davey Street, Carterton. He was the only son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Riggs and was born at Wellington on November 8, 1394. He had resided most of his life in Carterton. He had been employed by the Post and Telegraph Department far over 31 years, the greater part in the telephone exchange at Carterton. The only break he had from his work at Carterton was when he enlisted for active service in the Great War. He was finally discharged from service in 1919. The late Mr. Riggs was a firstclass hockey player in. his younger days, an enthusiastic member of the Carterton. Golf Club and had been an active member of the Carterton Bowling Club for some years. He was one of the club’s selectors at the time of his death. He had been a member of Loyal Heart of Oak Lodge of Odd Fellows for the past 31 years. The late Mr. Riggs is survived by his widow, there being no children. He also leaves two sisters, Mrs. E. Nix. of Garrison Street, and Mrs. CarswellCook, of Wellington. The funeral took place this afternoon following a service at his late residence. Donations to Fire Brigade. The Carterton Fire Brigade wishes to express its appreciation of donations received from 'the following: Messrs. W. Howard Booth, £5; J. H. Dudson, £2/2/-; Mesdames L. Aplin, £2/2 and C. R. McPhee, £2/2/-. A Big Eel. On Saturday afternoon Master L. Spooner, of Rhodes Street, Carterton, in the stream that crosses the road near the Dalefield railway crossing, caught an eel weighing 38-llbs. Personal Items. Mr and Mrs Ivan Tucker, of Auckland, are the guests of Mrs Gayfer, Rhodes Street. Word has been received by Mrs Gaylor. Rhodes Street, Carterton, of the sudden death of her sister, Mrs Gilbert, while visiting her daughter, Mrs B. Smart, of Kimbolton. Stuart Stark, son of Mr and Mrs G. Stark, of Kent Street, Carterton, was taken to the Masterton Hospital yesterday and was successfully operated upon this morning for appendicitis.
