The Town Clerk, Mr G. T. O’Hara Smith, .has returned from a visit to Paekakariki.
Mrs W. Murfitt and her daughter, of Auckland, are the guests of Mrs T. F. Candy, Solway. Mr C. R. Mabson, Borough Engineer, Masterton, has returned after spending a holiday in Invercargill. A New x'Oi"- message reports the death of Mr. William Kissam Vanderbilt, a prominent American railway director.
At Pahiatua yesterday, the death occurred of Mrs Helena Smith, widow of Mr. Thomas Smith. Alfredton. at the age of 93 years. The death occurred at Palmerston North on Saturday of Mrs Annie Elizabeth Macintosh, formerly of Woodville, at the age of 73 years. The death occurred at the Masterton Hospital on Saturday of Mr John Saunders, formerly a resident of the Lower Hutt. He had lately been an inmate of Carter’s Horne, Carterton.
The death has occurred of the noted shipping authority Sir Arthur Hill, aged 80 years, a London cablegram reports. He was chairman of the Board of Trade Advisory Committee on Merchant Shipping from 1907 to 1937. Mr. J. A. Lee has accepted a cabled request from 'The Protestant,’ New York, that he be' added to> their board of editorial advisers. “The Protestant” edited by Kenneth Leslie, is an American anti-Fascist monthly, and its board of editorial advisers includes Pierre van Paasen, author of "The Days of Our Years.” and “The Time is Now,” the Dean of Canterbury, the general secretary of the Christian Fellowship of Canada (Mr. J. M Freeman),_ and the director of social action of the Congregational Church of the United States (Mr. Dwight J. Bradley). Mr. Lee will contribute articles on New Zealand and Imperial affairs.
The Very Rev. Father L. R. Evatt. S.M., has been appointed as rector of St. Patrick’s College, Silverstream, in succession to the Very Rev. Father Kennedy, who is shortly to take charge of St. John's College,. Lismore. New South Wales. The new rector of Silverstream College was born in Wellington, being a son of Lieut.-Colonel R. L. Evatt. He was educated at the Marist Brothers’ Schoo] in Tasman Street and at St. Patrick’s College, Wellington. He entered, the seminary at Greenmeadows in .'.925 and was ordained to the priesthood in 1931. He was appointed to the teach: ng staff at Silverstream in the following year. In July of last year he returned to Greenmeadows to go through the second novitiate course.
