SCHOOL CONCERT

AN EXCELLENT PROGRAMME

(“Times-Age” Special.) A most enjoyable time was spent on Wednesday evening last when parents and friends attended the local school concert and Christmas tree gathering. Much credit is due to Mr Taverner and the assistant teacher, Miss Cave, for the high standard of acting and singing by the pupils. Both teachers had spared no effort and the children were a credit to their teachers. The juniors opened the programme with several songs, poetry and verse speaking. Two songs were nicely sung by Betty Houlbrooke. A junior play. ‘‘The Toy Shop,” was well acted by several little children representing toys. The pupils gave a folk dance and a senior play, “The Happy Man’s Shirt,’’ was very well acted and much enjoyed. Songs were sung by the senior class. Items were also given by Margaret Payne, Gwen Henderson, Anne McKay and by the boys and girls of the school. Miss Cave was the ac-. companist. Messrs Burch and Taverner presented the school children with prize books. Mr Burch thanked Mr Taverner and Miss Cave for putting on the concert and the ladies for helping to make it a success. The arrival of Father Christmas was marked by the children with cheers. Every child received a present and a bag of sweets from a gaily decorated Christmas tree. Each child also received an ice cream. Supper was arranged by a ladies’ committee. A cake raffled in aid of the school funds was won by Mrs M. Brannigan. A dinner was won by Mr A. Rolls and a large teddy bear by Airs J. McKay. After supper the hall was cleared and dancing was enjoyed, the music being supplied by Mrs Houlbrooke. Personal Items Mrs W. Hood has returned to Masterton after having spent a few days with Mrs Burch. Miss Cave has left to spend the Christmas vacation with her parents at Gladstone.
