“HONEST GEORGE”
AND OTHER RETIRING MEMBERS. FAREWELLED BY NATIONAL PARTY. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. “If members of Parliament consider nothing but personal popularity the result will be a very poor Government. A seat in Parliament is but a small thing compared with the welfare of the country. The man who has not got the backbone to face up to difficulties is not worth much.” —These remarks were made by the Rt. Hon. G. W. Forbes, M.P., when replying to tributes paid him at the annual Dominion conference of the New Zealand National Party in Wellington. In addition Mr Forbes, Mr J. G. Cobbe and Mrs Polson, who are also retiring, were present and reference was made to another retiring member, Mr H. G. Dickie.
Colonel H; G. Livingstone, Christchurch; who voiced the party’s appreciation of the services given by the retiring members, made special reference to the long Parliamentary career of Mr Forbes, who has been a member of Parliament for 35 years, while Messrs Dickie and Cobbe had also given exceptionally long service. Mrs Polson had put politics on a high plane and her speeches had been read in every home.
The National Party leader, Mr S. G. Holland, said Mr Forbes had been one of the Empire’s great statesmen. He retired from politics with a wonderful record and a grand name, that of “Honest George.” Messrs Cobbe and Dickie had given outstanding service, both to the country and their (Hectorates, while no member in such a short time had made such an impression as Mrs Polson, whose presence in the House had been an inspiration.
A motion, recording the party’s appreciation of the services of the retiring members and wishing them happiness in the future was carried by acclamation and with musical honours. Mr Forbes said he had been asked by some people why he was retiring, since he was in excellent health. His reply had been that the old order in politics was passing, giving place to a new and he was aware that he belonged to the old order.
