STATE THEATRE
“DOWN ARGENTINE WAY” Probably it is no exaggeration to describe “Down Argentine Way,” the feature which will be shown tonight, as the best technicolour film yet presented by Twentieth CenturyFox. As a spectacle, Masterton film audiences will probably agree that they have seen nothing more spectacular. Seldom has colour been so beautifully balanced without being overdramatised. It provides a background that is worth seeing for itself alone, and yet it is part and parcel of the film. The beauty of it has not been spoilt by over-emphasis at the expense of the pace of the story. In such a blaze of technicolour splendour, focused on Buenos Aires social attractions, vivid race meetings and jumping contests, sequestered stud farms, old Spanish buildings, and many other picturesque scenes, comedy or romance has to be good to prevent attention wandering until it concentrates purely on the charm of the magnificent sequences. In “Down Argentine Way,” crammed as it is with romance, comedy, and ’‘horse interest,” this danger has been eliminated. There is musical support that is brilliant. The leading roles are taken by Betty Grable, Don Ameche and Charlotte Greenwood.
