It’s a sign of the times when a girl feels “outside the pale” because she’s not in uniform. When ' five Auckland girls went out together on a recent night, there was only one not in uniform. As it happened, she was filling a man’s place in a bank, but on this occasion, while the soldier girls flung “mess’ gossip about and chronicled the doings of Corporal Mary Jones and Sergeant Sally Smith, she felt, she said, “like a conchy.” Manslaughter Charge.

“Girls enlisting ror service in the armed forces are covered by the Occupational Re-establishment Emergency Regulations in the same manner as males, and they are entitled thereunder to reinstatement in their civil occupations on demobilisation,’ states the Director of National Service, Mr J. S. Hunter. “Apparently,” he adds, “some girls who are desirous of enlisting in the armed forces, and who are employed in undertakings which have not been declared essential, have resigned their positions with the idea of facilitating their entry into the armed forces. By so doing they place themselves outside the protection afforded by the regulations.” The director stressed the advisability of a girl remaining in her present position till such time as she was actually posted for service with the forces. On receipt of a mobollsation notice she should promptly advise her employer, but she should not tender her resignation if she wished to have the benefit of the Occupational Re-estab-lishment Emergency Regulations. Her employer was debarred by the National Service Emergency Regulations from dismissing her because of her entry into the forces. .
