RHINELAND FACTORIES

BLASTED BV THE ROYAL AIR FORCE DUSSELDORFF A MAIN TARGET. HEAVY AND CONCENTRATED ATTACK. LONDON, January 28. The R.A.F. followed up yesterday’s daylight offensive against the Nazis with a night of heavy attacks on,Hitler’s Rhineland factories. Six bombers failed to get back. One of the main targets was the great ammunition centre of Dusseldorf!. Giant Lancasters and Halifaxes released several hundred tons of bombs, including many 40001 b. bombs, in a twenty-minute raid. Though heavy clouds obscured the full results, pilots could see the glare of huge fires and the attack is believed to have been very effective. Anti-aircraft gunfire was intense at first but fell off considerably as the attack 'developed. A few enemy aircraft dropped bombs this morning on a coastal town in south-east England. There were a small number of casualties and some damage was done. Fighters destroyed an enemy bomber off the east coast of England this afternoon.
