AGE BENEFITS
PROVISION UNDER SOCIAL SECURITY SCHEME. PERSONS TAKING UP WORK. i A certain amount of misapprehension appears to exist about the position of Social Security age beneficiaries who may take up work of a casual or other' nature. The point is defined by Mr J. •L. L. Wood, registrar at Masterton. Mr Wood stated this morning that if age beneficiaries took up work they should notify the Department, as by so doing they could have their benefit recommenced as soon as they ceased work again. The money so earned by an age beneficiary was not a charge against his benefit. On the other hand, if the Department was not notified and the benefit was continued to be drawn, the earnings were chargeable as in- < come in the assessment of the benefit. It was most important from the age beneficiaries’ point of view that the . Department should be notified when work was taken up. Mr Wood added, that each case was dealt with on its merits and the commissioner gave a decision accordingly. The authority for this action is contained in the Social Security (Employment of Age Beneficiaries) Emergency Regulations, 1942, published on August 27.
