Mr and Mrs R. Cooper, Pongaroa, are visitors to Masterton. Visitors to Marton are Mr and Mrs A. M. Theed, of Pongaroa. Mr and Mrs F. H, Mayman, of Pongaroa, are spending a holiday in Waipukurau. Lance-Corporal P. Hawksworth is making good progress in the Masterton Hospital following a recent operation. A former medical officer of the Department of Health, Dr John Boyd, died at Mount Eden, Auckland, aged 63. Miss Irene Colvin, Ashburton, and Miss Vayne Toll, Kaiapoi, are the guests of Mrs J. Leighton, Short Street, Masterton. The death, at the age of 86, of Sir Alexander Blomfield, R.A., Past President of the Royal Institute of British Architects, is reported in a cablegram from London. The funeral of the late Mrs J. D. Goodall took place in Masterton yesterday. A service at the chapel and one at the graveside were conducted by the Rev I. C. Edwards. The pallbearers were Messrs P. Lyons. H. M. Boddington, A. Jones and G. Davis. Mr Bert Chapman, of Morrinsville, and formerly of Masterton, is a visitor to Masterton. In his younger days Mr Chapman was a well-known Wairarapa representative footballer, being a brilliant hooker.

There was a representative attend.ance at the funeral of the late Miss E. A. Robins, which took place in Masterton yesterday. Services were conducted by Mr C. D. Bauckham, of the Gospel Hall Brethren. The pall-bearers were Messrs 11. Bannister, W. Bannister, W. Trudgeon and S. Hall. Squadron Leader F. L. Park has returned to New Zealand after three years’ service in the Middle East. During that time he served in Iraq, Persia, Syria and Libya. Squadron Leader Park is the elder brother of Air Vice Marshal Sir Keith Park, commander of the air defences at Malta. When in Cairo, the brothers met for the first time since they were together in Flanders in 1917.

Mr William Marcus Wright, well known in the Public Service in Wellington, died at his residence, Oriental Bay, aged 76. He was born in London, and came to New Zealand as a boy. In 1896 he joined the Civil Service in the Registrar-General’s department, and was for some years one of the compilers of the New Zealand Official Year Book. In 1922 he was appointed registrar of friendly societies, and retired from the service in 1930. The death has occurred in Auckland of Mr Hendry Luke, aged 69, chairman of the Auckland Harbour Board since 1939. When a younger man, he was officer in charge of the board’s works, and 20 years ago he went into business on his own account. He was chairman and managing director of Wilton Collieries, Ltd., managing director of Petrous Tile Co., Ltd., a director of Amalgamated Brick and Pipe Co., Ltd., and the National Timber Co., Ltd. Mr Luke was also a member of the Waikato Coal Mines’ Control Board, which was set up on October 10. 1942, after the strike had been settled and the mines declared under State control. The death has occurred at Auckland of Mr Guy R. Thynne, aged 62. He was formerly manager of the Taumarunui branch of Messrs Abraham and Williams, Ltd. Mr Thynne was a resident of Taumarunui for 16 years until 1935, when he was transferred to Palmerston North. Since his retirement, owing to ill-health, he had lived in Auckland. He saw service in France during the last war. He is survived by his wife, three married daughters and a son, who is in. the Royal Navy. The late Mr Thynne was many years ago on the staff of Messrs Abraham and Williams, Ltd., at Masterton. He was a well-known Wairarapa hockey representative and a prominent cricketer.
