NAZI CHIEF OF STAFF
NEW APPOINTMENT ANNOUNCED. A POLITICAL GENERAL. (By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright) (Received This Day, 10.30 a.m.) LONDON, December 10. _ The Berlin radio announced that an of J licial news agency stated that General Zeitzler, Herr Himmler’s representative at Hitler's headquarters, has succeeded General Halder as chief of the general staff. The appointment is believed to have been made six months ago, when it was reported, that General Halder, who was one of Hitler's favourites, was dismissed ' because of a disagreement over strategy. It was rumoured in October that General Jodi had succeeded Halder. General Zeitzler is aged 47 and is known as a political general, in contradistinction to General Halder, who is strictly a professional soldier. General Zeitzler has been described as “a gangster and a political protege of Himmler.” He left the army m 1917 as a lieutenant, rejoined it in 1926. He became a colonel in 1935, a general in 1942 and was given command of a panzer division.
