Mrs J. Lawson, Pownall Street, Masterton, is on a visit to Napier. Mrs N. Irwin, Pownall Street, Masterton, has returned from a visit to Wanganui. Mr R. Gyde, of Hastwell, has found it necessary to enter the Masterton Hospital for treatment. Mrs H. O. Bunny, Chapel Street, Masterton, has returned from a visit to the Chateau, Tongariro. Mr W. A. Kritsch, of Auckland, has been appointed manager of the Regent Theatre, Masterton, and has taken up his duties. Mrs W. A. Todd, Lansdowne, who has been staying with her daughter, Mrs Gorringe, Mangaweka, has returned to Masterton. The death of Mr Adam Blacklock Thomson, managing director of T. de Schryver, Ltd., is announced in a Press Association message from Auckland. The engagement is announced of Dorothy Beatrice Margaret, daughter of Mr and Mrs W. A. Todd, Lansdowne, and Pilot Officer John Charles, eldest son of Mr and Mrs C. Godsiff, Marlborough Sounds. Mr and Mrs L. R. Wilton, of ‘“Tirohanga,” Masterton, wish to announce the engagement of their eldest daughter, Dorothy Joan, to Pilot Officer Trevor Hamilton (R.N.Z.A.F., overseas), second son of Mr and Mrs F. C. Daniell, Essex Street, Masterton. The interment of the late Mr W. H. Payne took place at the Masterton Cemetery yesterday afternoon. The burial service was conducted by the Ven. Archdeacon E. J. Rich. Messrs F. J., J., V. A., and R. Payne were the pall-bearers. At a meeting of the stewards of the Carterton Racing Club last night it was decided to write to Mr J. G. Oates, the club’s patron, sympathising with him in his illness and wishing him an early recovery. Mr Oates is an inmate of the Masterton Hospital. The death has occurred of Mrs Elizabeth Louise Prince, Island Bay, who was one of the foundation members of the Studio Club, now the Wellington Sketch .and Studio Club. For many years she was a member of the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts and a regular exhibitor. News was received recently by Mr and Mrs F. C. Daniell, Essex Street, Masterton, that two of their sons had received promotion. The youngest son, Rex, who is in the Middle East, is now Flight-Lieutenant, while the other, Trevor, has received his commission and is at present engaged in radio research work in England. A very highly respected resident of Martinborough, Mrs Eva Laura McLaren, wife of Mr Robert W. McLaren, a well-known stock and commission agent, died yesterday. She took a very keen interest in local affairs and was associated with various patriotic efforts. She leaves, in addition to her husband, two daughters to mourn her death. The funeral of the late Mr H. J. Hutchings, of “The Knolls,” Featherston, took place in Masterton yesterday afternoon. The Ven. Archdeacon E. J. Rich officiated. Among the wreaths was one from the directors and shareholders of the Featherston Dairy Co. Messrs F. S. Hutchings, J. Hutchings, L.Holdaway, L. Willis, .A. Cook and F. Burt acted as pall-bearers. Mr J. A. Bush, Marton, has retired from the position of president of the Dominion Federated Sawmillers’ Association after occupying that position for nine years. He has been elected the first life member of the association and has been appointed honorary associate president, in recognition of the service which he has giyen to the industry. Mr L. E. H. Baigent, Nelson, vice-president for the past seven years, has been elected president, and Mr K. C. A. Carter, Ohakune, vicepresident. Well known in commercial and sporting circles in Wellington, Mr Frederick William Rankine died at his home in Hataitai recently. Mr Rankine was born in Adelaide in 1876, and came to New Zealand in 1905, and shortly afterward entered business in partnership with Mr C. V. Sutherland as motor importers. He was interested in all branches of sport, and was a member of the Lyall Bay and Victoria Bowling Clubs. He accompanied the team of New Zealand bowlers who visited Queensland in 1939.
