RICE SUPPLIES

NEEDED FOR PACIFIC ISLAND NATIVES. NONE FOR CIVIL POPULATION IN AUSTRALIA. (Special Australian Correspondent) (Received This Day, 1.15 p.m.) SYDNEY, This Day. Supplies of rice for the Australian population have been suspended temporarily. This step has been taken because the native populations of the Pacific islands now depend upon Australian rice for their existence, and Australia has accepted the responsibility of feeding them. Australian and New Zealand services are also being supplied. The consumption of rice by the natives of Fiji, the New Hebrides, New Cqjedonia and other Fighting French islands of the Pacific is stated to be 81bs. per head per week. Plans are in train to expand the Australian rice-growing industry.
