POST OFFICE BUILDING
FATE STILL UNDECIDED. OLD PORTION MAY BE LATER DEMOLISHED. The fate of the Masterton Post Office building, which was damaged in the recent earthquake, is not yet determined. There is a possibility that the old portion of the building may be demolished later, to make room for a reinforced concrete structure. Any new construction is not likely during the war period and in the meantime, the present building will probably be more or less repaired to meet immediate needs, at least for the duration of the war. The old portion of the building, which included the tower, was erected in 1900. Practically the whole of the tower has now been demolished and when this is completed it is intended to reopen the main entrance, after it has been roofed. The recently-erected wall at the western end of the new building is to be replaced, it is understood, with wood. This wall was badly shattered in by the earthquake. The old portion of the building bears many traces of the earthquake and a number of cracks are to be seen in some interior and exterior walls. There is distinct evidence that the building received a substantial wrench.
