LIFE OF PARLIAMENT

EXTENSION OPPOSED. TRADES COUNCIL VIEW. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, July 7. While appreciating the difficulties of involving the country in a general election during the war, the Auckland Trades Council of the Federation of Labour feels that the greatest possible danger to the interests and democratic principles of the people exists in endorsing an indefinite extension of the life of Parliament, states a resolution carried by the council. The effect robs the public of the right to criticise the War Administration and reduces the people’s representation in Parliament to a farce. It urges the National Council to present to Cabinet the importance of preserving freedom to elect and re-elect at normal periods in the life of Parliament.
