HOCKEY NOTES IMPROVED STANDARD OF PLAY. (“Times-Age” Special.) Two men’s games were played locally on Saturday. The ladies’ team had a bye. The surface of the playing ground was in excellent order. Both games showed that the standard of play generally is improving and that all the teams can now be relied upon to produce fast and skilful hockey. D beat F after very even play, while C beat E in a closely contested game. The local team, owing to some members being engaged in Home Guard duties played short and was beaten by A. At present there are about three teams level, and next week’s round is the last of the first half of the series. Very favourable comment continues to be made on the condition of the hockey grounds, players from outside centres comparing them more than favourably with many grounds elsewhere in the North Island. TOWN HALL A THRILLING PICTURE. The thrilling picture, “Brigham Young, Frontiersman,” will be shown tonight, with Tyrone Power and Linda Darnell in the chief roles.
