CARTERTON

P„ & A. SOCIETY MONTHLY MEETING OF COMMITTEE (“Times-Age” Special.) Mr W. Howard Booth presided over the monthly meeting of the general committee of the Wairarapa P. and A. Society at Carterton on Saturday. Apologies for absence were received from Messrs O. A. Cadwallader, P. Bain and V. L. Robinson. . Mr Booth referred to the deaths of Mrs W. G. Hodder and Pte. T. McKenzie and a vote of condolence was passed to the relatives. The treasurer reported a credit balance of £230 6s 9d. The committee appointed at the last meeting to go into the question of forwarding parcels to members overseas, and reported that it had been decided to send parcels of tobacco to the men, and suitable presents to women members who were doing war work. The action of the committee was approved. The Carterton Patriotic Committee wrote in connection with the National Appeal, and solicited a donation to the fund. It was resolved to donate £lO 10s to be divided between the Carterton, Greytown, Featherston and Martinborough funds. The Y.M.C.A. wrote asking the Society to instal suitable heating in the supper room at the King’s Theatre, and suggested that a buck chimney be built on the eastern side of the building. The committee did not favour the proposal in connection with the chimney, but was prepared to supply either electricity or gas for both the supper room and the main hall. The holding of a combined sheep show in the Wairarapa in the autumn was proposed by Mr Harvey. The proposal was sympathetically received and it was decided the matter be discussed further at the next meeting. Messrs A. E. Booth and L. H. Smart reported having inspected the Showgrounds and said that everything was in good condition. Education Board Election. Mr H. J. McKenzie, who is well known in the Wairarapa as a Rugby football player and referee, is offering his services to school committees as a Wairarapa representative on the Wellington Education Board. At present the Wairarapa rural area has two members on the board, both residing in Wellington City. There are 75 schools in the area, and Mr McKenzie does not think that the wants of these schools can be properly attended to by members living so far away as Wellington. Personal Items. Mr and Mrs Tragmar and family, who have resided at Hinau Gully, Belvedere, for a number of years, will shortly leave the district. On Friday evening next the settlers will entertain them at a gathering in the Belvedere Schoolroom. “John Bull’s” Admiration. “John Bull” expressed his admiration of the splendid effort in aid of the Patriotic Funds made on Friday by the ladies of Ponatahi, Ahiaruhe, Kokotau, East Taratahi and north-east Carterton. As a result of a shop day held that day, they raised £2OO for the funds. “John Bull” congratulates the ladies concerned on their excellent work, and expresses the hope that this fine result will be the forerunner of other successful efforts of a similar kind. REGENT THEATRE ' “WATERLOO BRIDGE.” Finally tonight will be shown the sensational picture, “Waterloo Bridge,” which graphically tells a story of the Great War and its connecting link with the present war. Vivien Leigh, Robert Taylor, Lucille Watson and Virginia Field have the leading roles.
