PORTABLE RUNWAYS

FOR USE IN COMBAT AREAS. AMERICAN EXPERIMENTS. (By Telegraph—Press Association— Copyright) (Received This Day, Noon.) WASHINGTON, June 21. Army and Air Force officials disclosed that, after experimenting, they had tentatively adopted four types of metal mesh strip for the construction of portable runways to be used for emergency airfields in combat areas. It was explained that several types were required for the different terrain which can be expected in the battle zones. Some of the runways are designed for fighters and others for bombers up to 25 tons. A test of the bombing and shelling of runways has shown that artillery fire is the more damaging, owing to its tearing effect.
