Born at Greymouth 70 years ago, Mr O’Flynn spent the earlier years of his life teaching in a number of West Coast schools. He was appointed headmaster at Charleston in 1893, and held similar positions at Dobson, Runanga (17 years), Heathcote and Hornby, being headmaster at Hornby for the last 12 years of his 50 years as a school teacher. He was appointed to the Legislative Council upon his retirement in 1937. He was a foundation member of the Greymouth branch of the New Zealand Educational Institute, and a foundation member of the West Coast Rugby Union and the Buffer Rugby Union.
