ONSLAUGHT ON SEBASTOPOL
Terrific Efforts to Silence Defending Batteries ENEMY ATTACKS BROKEN ON KHARKOV FRONT GAINS MADE BY RUSSIANS AT SOME POINTS LONDON, June 16. The Axis onslaught on Sebastopol grows daily more desperate. Fighting has now narrowed down to two main fronts. The enemy is making a particularly violent assault against the central defences, but the Russians are standing firm. The Germans have made a terrific attempt to silence the coastal batteries, at a cost out of all proportion to the results achieved. They are hurling in more and more heavy guns. The situation at Sebastopol, it is reported, remains critical. The German radio admits that the Russians, supported by warships, attempted to land behind the German lines at points 35 miles north, west of Sebastopol and 30 miles east of the fortress. The enemy claims that the Soviet forces have been beaten off. On the Kharkov front Russian troops have broken enemy resistance by counter-attacks and have advanced at some points and occupied more favourable positions.
