The Hon. F. Jones, Minister of Defence, returned to Wellington yesterday from Auckland. The Hon. D. G. Sullivan, Minister of Supply, returned to Wellington yesterday from the South Island. The death occurred in Wellington on Saturday of Mr John Hannah, at one time district engineer in the Public Works Department, at the age of 82 years. News has been received by relatives in Dunedin of Miss Annie James, Presbyterian missionary in China, that she has been created a member of the Order of the British Empire. Her bravery and devotion to duty in the face of great danger have been warmly commended by British officials in China. The death lias occurred of Mrs Elizabeth Lily Nash, wife of Mr J. A. Nash, former M.P. for Palmerston and formerly mayor of Palmerston North for fifteen years. Mrs Nash for many years took a leading part in the city’s affairs, including war work, and aided in raising funds for many laudable purposes. The death occurred in Wellington on Saturday of Mr Charles Sims, who for some years was the head of the business firm known as Sims Hardware, Ltd. This business was conducted for some years in Cuba Street, and later on Lambton Quay. There is still a business of the same name at present in Wellington. Mr Sims’s death occurred after a long illness. Ordinary Seaman S. N. Braithwaite, one of the five New Zealanders who was reported in a London message to have been serving in H.M.S. Edinburgh when it was sunk in the Arctic, is well known in Wellington hockey circles. He was captain of the Victoria University College Hockey Club and was honorary treasurer of the Wellington Hockey Association, and is also a New Zealand University hockey Blue. In 1940 he took his M.Com. degree.
