Knitting Wool.
Further supplies of knitting wool have arrived. Knitters of goods for patriotic purposes may obtain wool on application to Mrs Nissen at the Women’s Patriotic Depot, Dixon Street, Masterton. Supplies of wool have been issued to the various women’s patriotic committees throughout the Wairarapa. Sun Clear of Spots. Mr G. V. Hudson, Karori. stated yesterday that on May 31 and June 1, as reported at the time, the sun was completely clear of spots. A spotless disc was also observed on June 5. On June 6 a group of very minute spots was detected with some difficulty, and this group was carried round by the sun’s rotation to the western limb by June 12, when the sun was again without spots, and remained so till yesterday, when a perfectly clear disc was again observed. Solar conditions during the first fortnight are those characteristic of the minimum, which is not due under the 11 years’ cycle till about the end of 1943, he explained. The present state of the sun may, of course, change at any time. Coincident with the cessation of sunspots activities the local weather has greatly improved during the past fortnight, and if it could be demonstrated that the world weather generally has reacted in a similar manner an appreciable step would have been made toward establishing a definite connection between solar activities and weather cycles.
Scheme to Save Petrol.
The Minister of Supply and Munitions, Mr Sullivan, issued a statement at Christchurch yesterday embodying a report received by him from the wheat and flour controller, Mr R. McPherson, showing the stage reached to date in carrying out the national scheme to save petrol, tires and manpower in the bread baking industry. It was announced previously by the Minister of Transport and himself that the petrol and tire position was such that there must be a nation-wide organisation. Without it the whole transport system of the country would be in danger of breaking down. The country as a "whole had co-operated in a very helpful way in the carrying out of this work, but still more would require to be done, he said. He was giving attention to tightening up schemes in various places, and actual zoning work would be carried out by Mr Semple and his department.
