Some 400,000 out of 1,100,000 Indians have been evacuated from Burma since the country was overrun by the Japanese. Refugees are still pouring into India at the rate of 1,000 daily. The refugees state that the Japanese have granted permission to any Indian to make the long trek across the frontier.
