UNREST IN FRANCE
NAZIS LIKELY TO REMOYE LAVAL PETAIN ALSO LOSING PRESTIGE NOl LONGER ABLE TO MAINTAIN CONTROL. REFUSAL OF COLLABORATION. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) NEW YORK, May 25. Private advices from Europe predict the imminent removal by the Germans of Laval because 90 per- cent of the people in both occupied and unoccupied France have refused to collaborate with Hitler, says the “New York Times.” Both French and foreign observers declare it would require only some specific action such as a British commando raid on St. Nazaire to crystallise the feeling of French people against Nazis. For some time pressure on the Laval regime, as a result of Italy’s renewal of her claims for French territory as well as United States demands regarding Martinique, have been reported to be nearing breaking point. Marshal Petain’s prestige is also waning fast within France. His policy of wait and see has failed. It is evident that the Marshal is no longer able to keep France in line under the terms of the French-German armistice.
