GIFT TO BRITAIN
CANADA’S FINE CONTRIBUTION. OTTAWA, March 19. Canada’s gift of 1,000,000,000 dollars in war supplies to Britain received immediate Conservative, Co-operative Commonwealth Federation, and Social Credit support when the Bill was submitted to the Canadian House of Commons. The proposal, the Hon. R. B. Hanson, Opposition Leader in the House, said, “is muoh more than a gesture.” It is “a very tangible recognition of an obligation, the payment of which is long past due by Canada.” Mr Coldwell, the Acting Leader of the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation, said his group would support the .legislation which represented assistance to the hard pressed British people.
fin addition to the gift, the Bill authorised the Minister of Finance to transform into a long term loan, in-terest-free during the war 700,000,000 dollars' worth of accumulated sterling balances which the Dominion now has in London. Canadian Government and Canadian National Railway securities held by the British Government amounting to approximately 295,000,000 dollars will also be repatriated.
