RATION CARDS
ISSUE TO SOLDIERS ON LEAVE. PROCEDURE EXPLAINED. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. The Minister of Defence, Mr Jones, stated last night that full provision has been made for members of the defence services to receive ration coupons when they were on leave or when they were not receiving rations from the Navy, Army, or Air Force, as the case may be. “When the leave is of short duration (up to 3 days) personnel will be given a set of coupons (RB. 3) for each day of leave,” said Mr Jones. “Each of these coupons entitles the holder to purchase a quarter ration of the commodity, on presentation to any retailer. “On longer leaves personnel will be given a ration card (R 8.5 which entitles the holder to purchase one or two weeks’ rations (as the case may be) from any retailer. For example, in the case of a soldier on leave who stays with his family his wife will present this soldier’s ration card to her retailer and draw supplies for the rationed commodities in exactly the same way as she draws them for her household.
“To meet the case of personnel who are serving in the defence services, and who are not receiving rations—e.g., personnel attached to some, headquarters and living in their homes or in boarding-houses—a special form, R 8.4, is provided. When this form is filled in and presented at a Post Of flee, the ordinary ration book is issued. This book is then used by the householder in the same way as the book of the other members of the household (or boarding-house).”
