Teacher was instructing his class in past, present, and future tenses. “Now I will give you an example,” he said. “Supposing I said, ‘I am a very handsome man.’ What tense would that be?” Jackie Brown, to whom the question was addressed, rose to his feet, with an artful smile on his face. “Please, teacher, that would be 'pretence,’ ” he replied.
