The Governor-General, Sir Cyril Newall, and Lady Newall, spent a busy day in Dunedin yesterday. Their Excellencies were accorded a civic reception in Port Chalmers in the afternoon. They left this morning for Gore. Mr and Mrs J. McKay, Pongaroa, are visiting Auckland. Mrs A. P. Bennett, Essex Street, Masterton, is staying at Lower Hutt. Mr and Mrs Albert Sorensen and family have left Pongaroa to take up their residence in Feilding. Miss Macintosh, Wellington, who has been staying with Mrs Carey, Lansdowne, has returned to her home. Mr and Mrs R. Ingram, of Martinborough, are the guests for a few days of Mr and Mrs E. Ingram, Hobson Street, Feilding. Advice has been received that Corporal J. M. Jenkin, son of Mr and Mrs J. Jenkin. Cornwall Street, is fit and well in the Middle East. Constable R. J. Bell, Wellington, has taken up duties with the Masterton Police Force in succession to Constable R. L. S. Hollis who was recently transferred to Pongaroa. Envoy and Mrs Muirhead, who have been'in charge of the Pahiatua corps of the Salvation Army for the . past twelve months have received notice of their transfer to Cromwell. The friends of Pilot Officer F. L. Gray, formerly of Masterton, who is at present serving overseas, will be pleased to learn that he is safe and well. Word to that effect has been received in Masterton.
The engagement is announced of Lillian Joyce,, eldest daughter of Mr and Mrs F. R. Coulson, “Motukai,” Ngaumu Road, Masterton, and William Henry, only son of Mr and Mrs W. J. Bray, Huiroa, Stratford. The death has occurred at Cape Town, a British Official Wireless message states, of Sir Alfred Young, formerly in the British Colonial Service. He was Chief Judicial Commissioner of the Western Pacific in 1923-29. He was 76 years of age. Dr. A. L. Sutherland, representative of St. David’s Presbyterian Church, Auckland, in medical missionary work in the Punjab district, India, is now a lieutenant in the Indian Medical Service, being stationed at Bannu, on the North-west frontier.
Lieutenant A. H. Armour, of Wellington, and formerly of Masterton, who was reported missing some time ago is now reported to be a prisoner of war. Lieutenant Armour, who is the son of Mr W. Armour, principal of Wellington. College, was attached to the staff at the Public Trust, Masterton. He was a Wairarapa representative Rugby player and was a member of the Old Boys Football Club. There was a representative attendance at the funeral yesterday afternoon of the late Mr Robert Judd. The Ven. E. J. Rich officiated, conducting a service at the residence and at the graveside. The chairman and councillors of the Mauriceville County Council, Mauriceville-Ihuraua branch of the Women’s Division, manager and staff of the F.C.D. Co., Ltd., Masterton Plunket Society, president and members of the Masterton Bowling Club, Whakarewa Golf Club and the Knitting Circle were among those sending wreaths. The pall-bearers were Messrs W. G. Lamb, R. H. Williams, L. Hughes. S. Brunton, N. Judd and E, W. Cheetham.
