GRATEFUL BRETONS
ADMIRATION OF 8.8. C. BROADCASTS.
A letter has recently been received in London (it had been four months on the way) in which a group of inhabitants of Brittany express their gratitude to the 8.8. C. ■■Dear friends of the 8.8. C..” the letter begins, “it is a great joy for us to be able to write to you. for we have so much wanted to express our admiration for your broadcasts and our gratitude for the comfort they bring us. Your voices, all so friendly, have become familiar to us all, even our children recognising them. You can be sure that your advice is listened to and followed.
“The Germans can do nothing, and they know it so well that they no longer try in our part of France to control what we are listening to. In certain streets in our town at night one can follow your broadcasts as one goes along, for sets are turned on full and windows flung wide open. And yet our town is very much ‘occupied.’ ”
The rest of the letter describes the lowering morale of the German troops in occupation, the suicide of two German officers, and resistance, even among school children.
