AMERICAN SHIPS

ARMING TO PROCEED APACE COLONEL KNOX STATES ORDER OF PRIORITY. VESSELS GOING TO BRITAIN PLACED FIRST. LONDON, November 18. The first American merchant ships to be armed under the revised Neutrality Act will be those sailing to Britain and Northern Europe. This was disclosed by the Secretary for the Navy, Colonel Knox. He added that second priority would be given to ships going to the Red Sea and third priority to those going to the South Atlantic.

Colonel Knox did not say when the arming will start, but in other quarters it is stated that it will begin this week. The Navy had guns and guncrews ready before the President signed-the empowering legislation.
